Ruyuan Tongtianluo Forest Park

Tongtianluo is located in Xingu village, Daping Township, 50km northwest of Ruyuan Yao Autonomous County, Shaoguan City, in the northeast of Nanling National Forest Park, 14km away from the reserve. In Nanling, there are two different landforms: from below Shikengkong (1902 meters above sea level, known as the first peak in Guangdong) to about 500 meters above sea level, there are granite and metamorphic rocks. It is characterized by high mountains, dense forests, deep valleys and dangerous peaks. The slope of most mountains is between 35 degrees and 45 degrees, and many waterfalls are formed in streams due to the water fall. The other is limestone landform, also known as "karst landform", with an altitude of 600-800 meters. It is characterized by relatively flat mountains, peculiar rocks, bare and poor water retention.

About the park

Tongtianluo is geologically called funnel because of abundant rainfall in southern China. In limestone geological areas, rainwater seeps into the ground along the cracks of rocks, dissolves the four walls all the way, gradually expands, and forms large karst caves underground. Under the action of gravity, the top of the cave collapses continuously until the cave finally collapses completely, forming a karst funnel.

The American ananxibo funnel is known as the first in the world. Its opening is 622 meters in diameter and 70 meters deep. On the limestone plateau with an altitude of more than 690 meters, Tongtianluo falls into the ground nearly 100 meters vertically. The well is round with a diameter of 73 meters, a maximum diameter of more than 140 meters at the bottom and a circumference of 450 meters at the bottom, which is known as "the first hole in China". The four walls of the cave stand on the opposite side of the slope, in an inverted trapezoid shape, which looks like a giant farmer's Guluo with a big belly and a small mouth. The name "Tongtianluo" comes from this. At the bottom is a primitive forest plant community with an area of about 3500 square meters. This natural system is almost isolated from the external ecosystem, which is rare in the world. It is a wonderful flower of limestone landform in northern Guangdong. It is called "underground forest" and "the first wonder in Guangdong".

There are many limestone caves and funnel-shaped caves in this area. Within a radius of only 10 square kilometers, there are as many as 15 large caves. In 1992, the amateur team from Guangzhou area of Cave Research Association of South China Normal University applied the international advanced technology of single rope vertical falling into the cave. It was measured that Tongtianluo is the largest of the 15 caves.
