Taiwan's green island prison is located in Green Island Township, Taitung County, Taiwan. It was completed in 1972. It is one of several correctional organs on the Green Island and a subordinate department of the "Ministry of justice" of the Taiwan authorities. The prison mainly accommodates the most difficult prisoners, which is a highly managed prison. The green island prison is also famous for accommodating such underworld leaders as Yiqing project and Zhiping project.

In the song "Green Island Serenade", green island refers to Taiwan. In Taiwan, however, green island is the place where political prisoners are held, once known as "Devil Island". Li Ao, Bo Yang and others have been detained here. At present, Taiwan's green island prison has been closed and become a tourist attraction.

The first "prison" on Green Island is this "freshman training camp". There is no high wall and iron gate here. Prisoners can go in and out freely. It is named "freshman" because they hope to regain "freshman" through self-improvement of "Prisoners". Most of these "freshmen" sent to green island are intellectuals from all walks of life. Many of them can't bear the heavy physical labor, get sick or even die.

Original name

The original name of green island is "huoshao island". Every winter and spring, the vegetation on the island is often attacked by sea breeze and salt, showing a state of withered and yellow, as if burned. In such a land, the freshmen have to get food by farming. In addition to physical labor, ideological punishment is the most severe test for freshmen. Freshmen have an hour lunch break every noon, most of them are used to read, write and study, but the content is strictly controlled. These textbooks are compulsory for them every day. In order to deepen the ideological reform of the "political prisoners", in 1953, the Green Island authorities launched the "one person, one matter, conscience saving movement" on the island, requiring the new "political prisoners" to respond and sign their names to take part in the movement, swearing to do a "good deed" every day in order to be loyal to the Kuomintang. In order to show loyalty, we should "voluntarily" tattoo slogans such as "anti Communist and anti Russian", "kill Zhu and pluck Mao" on our arms. Once the "freshmen" who violate the regulations are found, they will be sent back to Taiwan to be convicted or even executed, or even imprisoned in green island. Today, there are only three blockhouses left on the green island. The younger generation of green island people don't even know what they used to be. Only these political victims can still remember them.
