Located in central, Hong Kong Island, Queen's Square is a public square with a long history in Hong Kong. Queen's Statue Square, formerly known as central square, was created with the reclamation in the 1880s. It was originally an open space. In 1897, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria, the Hong Kong government cast a bronze statue of the queen and placed it in the central square, which was also renamed Queen's Square.
Now every Sunday, Queen's Statue Square and its nearby streets are designated as pedestrian areas, and many Filipino maids choose this place as their resting place. In the 1980s, many columnists in Hong Kong newspapers jokingly called this plaza "binmei Plaza". In the mid-1990s, when the human rights act was passed by the Legislative Council, everyone automatically stopped using this half joking name to avoid being accused of racial discrimination.
