Yang a Miao's former residence is located in tingdian village, Jiangnan Town, Licheng District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province. It was built during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1875-1908) and lasted for 13 years. It is famous for its magnificent architecture and unique layout. It is full of the characteristics of Minnan folk houses.

Introduction to former residence

Yang a Miao, an overseas Chinese from the Philippines, was built in 1894 and completed in 1911. It took 18 years to complete. It has three rooms and five bays. It has a suspended Hill roof. There are two groups of houses on both sides. In front of the house, dashicheng is surrounded by three brick walls. A large courtyard is built in front of the main building. Two small courtyards are formed between the East and West branches on both sides and between the East and West Wing rooms, commonly known as "five plum blossom courtyard".

The whole building is beautiful, spacious and bright. The walls, eaves, walls, pillars, doors and windows inside and outside the house are decorated with exquisite wood carvings, brick carvings, lacquer carvings, gray carvings, diabase and granite carvings. By means of openwork, relief and flat carving, a large number of rare birds and animals, flowers, birds and fish, landscape figures, stories of the Three Kingdoms and ancient patterns are carefully carved. The walls of the hall are carved with the calligraphic works of Yan Zhenqing of Tang Dynasty, Su Shi of Song Dynasty, Zhang ruitu of Ming Dynasty, Wu Lu of Qing Dynasty and other ancient calligraphers and painters. The whole building is magnificent, which is rare in Minnan folk architecture.

The former residence of Yang a Miao, a provincial cultural relic protection unit, is not only famous for its magnificent architectural carvings, but also for the carvings and color paintings in the architectural details. In its hall wall stacks, the art works of Yan Zhenqing of Tang Dynasty, Su Shi of Song Dynasty, Zhang ruitu of Ming Dynasty, Wu Lu of Qing Dynasty and other ancient calligraphers are carved. However, due to the long-term influence of natural factors and human factors, there have been many diseases, especially the most artistic value of the architectural surface decoration painting.

Yang's former residence is a typical example of the courtyard style residential building in Southern Fujian. Its construction techniques focus on the characteristics of Southern Fujian's folk houses, the essence of architectural decoration and the details of Minnan culture. The main features are the closed courtyard, the symmetrical axis and the primary and secondary, the clear inside and outside, the beautiful artistic form and the rich carving and painting decoration. The civil engineering adopts the French large wooden frame of traditional Chinese architecture, and the joint is mortise and tenon. The outline and shape of the building itself have the characteristics of sculpture, while the architectural decoration is good at the stone carving, wood carving, brick carving and clay carving of Minnan style. In terms of cultural connotation, the information of traditional culture is disseminated everywhere, which not only reflects the closed atmosphere of primary and secondary respect and courtesy, but also makes people feel the influence of marine culture. The architectural style of red brick collage and inlay on the wall is very similar to the red brick buildings originated from ancient Rome in Europe and the decoration treatment of Arab buildings in Western Asia, which has important research value.
