Southern Medical University, formerly known as the First Military Medical University of the Chinese people's Liberation Army, was established in 1951. It was designated as a national key university in 1979. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province and renamed Southern Medical University. The university is one of the first batch of universities jointly built by "ministries and commissions" in China and the only one in Guangdong Province. It is also the "key construction university" of high-level universities in Guangdong Province.
