Han Xizai's banquet

Han Xizai's night banquet is a painting by Gu Hongzhong, a painter of the Southern Tang Dynasty in the period of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. The existing Song Dynasty copy and silk version with colors are now in the Palace Museum in Beijing.

The painting of Han Xizai's banquet depicts the scene of Han Xizai's family setting up a banquet, singing and having fun. This painting depicts a complete process of Han Fu's banquet, which includes five scenes: playing pipa, watching dance, resting between the banquet, blowing and seeing off guests. The lines of the whole work are vigorous and smooth, neat and fine, and the composition is imaginative.

The whole picture shows that Han Xizai is immersed in the evening banquet, implying that he will live his life with disappointment, which in turn strengthens his pursuit and yearning for a better life. In the picture, Han Xizai was born into a noble family. In the turbulent society, he saw through the severe situation of officialdom, avoided being the prime minister, took the voice and color as the strategy of concealment, and played with his family and guests every night. The emperor sent Gu Hong to the palace to draw it. Gu Hongzhong reappeared a picture full of guests based on his observation and imagination.
