Peking University medical education began in 1912. After its establishment, it was successively called National Beijing Medical School, Peking University Medical College, Peking Medical College and Peking Medical University. In 2000, it merged with Peking University and became a new Peking University, which was renamed Peking University Medical Department.

In nearly a century of school running practice, the medical department of Peking University has gradually formed a study style of "diligence, preciseness, realism and innovation" and a school spirit of "firm and correct political direction, rigorous and realistic academic attitude and dedicated service spirit".

The Department of medicine of Peking University has a strong faculty and nearly 10000 professional and technical personnel, including nearly 6000 people with senior professional titles, 11 academicians of the two academies, 74 Changjiang Scholars and 16 experts with outstanding national contributions. The Department of medicine of Peking University has a wide range of subjects. Up to 2007, the key disciplines assessed by the Ministry of medicine include physiology, neurobiology, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, immunology, pathology and pathophysiology, internal medicine (cardiovascular disease), internal medicine (Hematology), internal medicine (Nephrology), pediatrics, psychiatry and mental health, dermatology and Venereology, surgery (extraosseous), surgery (Urology) There are 24 departments, including obstetrics and Gynecology, ophthalmology, oncology, sports medicine, Clinical Stomatology, basic Stomatology, epidemiology and health statistics, medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy and pharmacology.
