Shaoguan University is a local undergraduate college jointly built by the provinces and cities under the charge of the people's Government of Guangdong Province. In the course of running the school for 48 years, the school has provided more than 75000 talents for the society.

The predecessor of the school is Shaoguan normal college founded in 1958. It was renamed Shaoguan normal school in 1970 and resumed Shaoguan normal college in 1978. In 1989, Shaoguan normal college and municipal Shaoguan University merged into a new Shaoguan University. In March 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Shaoguan University and Shaoguan Institute of education merged to establish Shaoguan University at the undergraduate level. In 2004, it was approved as a bachelor's degree awarding unit.

At present, the school has 8 secondary colleges, including Yingdong College of bioengineering, School of information engineering, School of economics and management, School of Arts, School of chemistry and environmental engineering, School of foreign languages, School of physical education, School of continuing education, Department of politics and public management, Department of law, Department of mathematics

There are 10 teaching departments (centers) directly under the University, music department, education department, tourism management department, fine arts department, social science department, modern educational technology department and computing center. There are also two independent corporate secondary colleges outside Shaozhou Normal University and medical college. By the end of 2005-2006, there were 32 undergraduate majors and 15 specialized majors. At present, there are five school level key disciplines including vegetable science, applied chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, machinery manufacturing and automation, Chinese language and literature, and five school level key supporting disciplines including food science, physical education and training, Marxist theory and ideological and political education, tourism management, and applied mathematics.

With full-time undergraduate education as the main part and higher vocational education as the auxiliary part, the university has made great efforts to run various forms and levels of continuing education, actively jointly run postgraduate education, and created conditions to obtain the qualification for holding postgraduate education. Relying on Shaoguan and based on the whole province, the university enrolls students from 19 provinces and autonomous regions, with 9968 full-time undergraduates, 2271 junior college students, and 10232 correspondence and evening university adult education students.

There are 739 teachers in the school, including 74 with senior professional title, 238 with deputy senior professional title, 330 with intermediate professional title, 52 with doctor's degree and 236 with master's degree.

At present, the school covers a total area of 2511 mu, with a total building area of 447800 square meters, including 188500 square meters of teaching and administrative rooms. The school has 5 experimental centers, including computing center, educational technology center, experimental center of Yingdong Bioengineering College, experimental center of Information Engineering College and experimental center of Continuing Education College; 27 basic and professional laboratories, 123 experimental sub rooms, 2 provincial key experimental rooms, 1 provincial experimental teaching demonstration center and 6 school experimental teaching demonstration centers. The total value of fixed assets of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 86.104 million yuan. The Library covers an area of 29400 square meters, with a total collection of 1.456 million volumes of literature, 1.384 million volumes of paper literature, 6000 kinds of Chinese and foreign periodicals, and 72000 kinds of e-books. The school is equipped with all kinds of multimedia classrooms. The school has 69 multimedia classrooms and 12 voice classrooms. There are 9214 seats in multimedia classrooms and voice classrooms, and 3237 computers for teaching. There are 92 teaching practice bases and 71800 square meters of sports venues.

The school has established more than 30 scientific research institutions, including Chinese Dialect Research Institute, Hakka Research Center, Biotechnology Research Institute and animal disease research institute. Published journal of Shaoguan University, educational research and other academic journals and university newspapers. Experts and scholars are often invited to carry out academic lectures and exchange activities. Since 2000, teachers have presided over or participated in 13 national level scientific research projects, 53 provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, 151 municipal level projects, 169 school level projects and 34 horizontal projects, with a total of 420 scientific research projects. It has won 22 national patents, 8 national, provincial and municipal science and technology progress awards, including 1 second prize of national science and technology progress award.

The university has actively carried out foreign exchanges, established inter school contacts and friendly cooperation with nearly 10 universities in Japan, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, South Korea and other countries. In the past two years, the university has started to train overseas students for South Korea and other countries, and has jointly trained master's and doctoral students with more than 10 universities such as South China University of technology, Central South University and Nanchang University.
