Shanghai University of applied technology is a full-time regular undergraduate college with distinctive characteristics, which is dominated by engineering, coordinated development of science, management, economics, arts, law, agriculture and arts. It is composed of National Model Colleges of Technology Shanghai Light Industry College, Shanghai Metallurgy College, Shanghai Chemical Engineering College and Shanghai spice research Institute under the former Ministry of light industry Formed by merger. In 2000, with the approval of Shanghai municipal government, it was upgraded to a full-time undergraduate university. In 2008, it became an authorized unit for master's degree and began postgraduate education. The university has 8 disciplines, 50 undergraduate majors, 4 first-class master's degree authorization points (including 22 second-class disciplines and directions), and 3 master's degree authorization points.

The school has two campuses, Fengxian and Xuhui, covering an area of more than 1600 mu. Fengxian campus is located in Fengxian Bay University Park, Xuhui campus is located in Zhangjiang High Tech Caohejing Park, southwest corner of Shanghai. Students are wandering in the beautiful campus of "garden, paradise and home", absorbing the nutrition of knowledge and accumulating the energy of struggle. The university has 19 secondary colleges (departments) and 15820 full-time Master, undergraduate and junior college students, including 14315 undergraduates and 907 postgraduates. In the past three years, the employment rate of graduates is more than 98%, and the employment rate of undergraduate graduates in 2016 is 99.52%.

The number of overseas students from all the other countries along the route has accounted for nearly half of the total number of students studying abroad in 108 countries. At present, there are four undergraduate Sino foreign cooperation projects in marketing, mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, electrical engineering and automation, and applied chemistry. In 2016, there were 29 student exchange programs, and 412 international student exchanges.
