It has a long history of running a school. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education and under the construction of "211 Project". Its predecessor is Hubei agricultural school founded by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang in 1898. It has a history of 116 years. The University was approved as a national key university by the State Council in 1979, and became one of the first batch of universities with the right to confer doctor's degree and master's degree in 1981.

The university has a comprehensive collection of 1.6 million books and 43000 GB e-books. The financial aid system is sound. The school should establish the incentive and guarantee mechanism of "six in one, linkage study" such as green channel, scholarship, student loan, subsidy for difficulties, work study, tuition fee reduction, etc., reward students with excellent character and learning, and support students from poor families to complete their studies.
