The predecessor of China Academy of fine arts is the National Academy of art. In 1928, Cai Yuanpei, who was then the president of the University, established the first comprehensive national institute of higher art, the National Academy of art, on the Bank of Xizi Lake in Hangzhou, with four departments of traditional Chinese painting, Western painting, sculpture and pattern, as well as the preparatory and research departments. He began the practice of "Aesthetic Education Replacing Religion" and opened the chapter of Chinese higher art education.

In the 80 years of the development history of China Academy of fine arts, it has moved its site several times, changed its name several times, and gone through wind and rain. Today's China Academy of fine arts campus renewal, concept inheritance, Department reorganization, subject expansion, has realized the great leap forward development in the history of the school. The school running conditions of China Academy of fine arts have been improved as never before. Nanshan campus, built in 2003, has achieved the modern interpretation of the Academy. Xiangshan Campus, which was put into use in 2007, has given birth to the vision of art home. The unique campus has become a new business card of Hangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city. The campus covers an area of more than 1000 mu, with a construction area of nearly 300000 square meters. It spans Hangzhou and Shanghai, and has three campuses: Nanshan, Xiangshan and Zhangjiang. In 2007, the fine arts discipline of China Academy of fine arts was once again listed as a national key discipline, and the first level discipline of fine arts was approved to set up a post doctoral research station.
