[plant morphology] cowpea

Annual twining herbs. Stem glabrous or nearly glabrous. Stipules rhombic, both ends narrower sharp, base on stem; 3 compound leaves alternate, terminal leaflets rhombic ovate, both leaflets oblique ovate. Inflorescence shorter than leaves, with 2-3 flowers; bracteoles spatulate, caducous; calyx campanulate, glabrous, shrunken, calyx teeth 5, lanceolate; corolla butterfly, lavender or yellowish white, flag and wing petals with ears, keel petals without ears; stamen 10,2-bodied; pistil 1, ovary sessile, inflorescence top covered with beard. Pods 20-30 cm long, pendulous; seeds reniform or globose. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruiting period is August.

It is cultivated in most parts of the country.
