The leaves are singularly pinnate, 12-25 cm long, with 9-13 leaflets and 7 sparse ones; the petiole is 1.5-3 cm long; the leaflets are nearly leathery, ovate or elliptic, 4-7 cm long and 2-3 cm wide; the apex is acute, blunt, and the base is round or broadly cuneate; the petiole is 4-5 mm long. Panicle axillary, with total pedicel 8-10 cm long; bracts and bracteoles broadly ovate, about 1 mm long; flowers extremely small, about 5 mm long; calyx campanulate, about 2 mm long, 5 teeth, 1 tooth longer below; corolla yellowish or milky white, flag petal nearly obcordate, apex slightly concave, wing petal long elliptic, keel petal semilunar, each petal clawed; stamens 9, 1 group; ovary narrowly elliptic Round, pubescent, style short. The pods are ligulate, oblong, 4.5-8 cm long, with leathery petals and reticulate, 1 seed and 2 rare seeds. The flowering period is from April to June.

Jiangzhenxiang used to be imported from abroad. It is mainly the heartwood of Indian sandalwood, which is called "Fanjiang" in the compendium. According to the plant distribution mentioned in the compendium, jiangzhenxiang may also include Capparis spinosa, a Rutaceae plant. See "shatangmu".
