[plant morphology] Rhamnus serrulatus, also known as Prunus humilis, white wood, Jiangli wood, koulian wood, jianger wood and antler thorn.

Deciduous shrub, up to 5 m high. Young branches grayish brown, glabrous or puberulent, opposite or nearly opposite, apex spinose. The leaves are usually opposite, or alternate, and gathered at the top of short branches. They are thin papery, obovate, elliptic or oblong, 4-8 cm long and 2-4 cm wide. The apex is short and acute, the base is cuneate, glabrous on the top, bearded on the axils of veins on the bottom, serrate on the edge, and 3-5 pairs of lateral veins. Petiole 0.8-1.5 cm long, pubescent or subglabrous. Flowers unisexual, green, cymose or clustered on spur; calyx 4-lobed; petals 4; stamens 4. Drupe globose, black at maturity, 0.7-0.9 mm in diameter, 2-nucleated. Seeds broadly obovate, abaxially longitudinally sulcate. The flowering period is from May to June.

Growing on hillsides, valleys or roadside shrubs. It is distributed in Shaanxi, Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan.
