Monoclinic system. The crystals are usually thin mica flakes. The color is brown, yellow brown and golden yellow. Streaks are white or brown. Luster pearl, metal or glass, slightly transparent to transparent. Cleavage according to the bottom, very complete. The hardness is 1-1.5. The specific gravity is 2.4-2.7. The thin sheet is flexible and less elastic. It occurs in altered rocks containing biotite or phlogopite and is the product of the change of biotite and phlogopite.

It is slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid, and its solution is light yellow. When 10% potassium ferrocyanide test solution is added, it turns blue.
