Deciduous trees, up to 10 meters high. Bark grayish brown, longitudinally lobed; young branches often purplish, smooth or less pilose. Single leaf opposite or often 3-whorled, sparsely alternate, petiolate, broadly ovate to suborbicular, 14-24 cm long and 12-22 cm wide, sparsely larger, undivided or palmately 3-splattered, lobes apex acuminate, base subcordate, entire, dark green above, pubescent below, sparsely pubescent along veins, palmately veined 5, often purplish, vein axils and leaf base often with purple spots The stalk is 9-17 cm long and dark purple. Inflorescence terminal; inflorescence axis and branches covered with sparse hair or glabrous; calyx 2-lobed, lobes broadly ovate, green or purple; corolla yellow white, with several rows of purple spots, 2-lipped, anterior lip 2-lobed, posterior lip 3-lobed, lobes marginal. Stamen 1, ovary superior, 2-locular, style slender, stigma 2-lobed. Capsule long cylindrical, 20-30 cm long. Dark brown when cooked. Seeds flat, oblong, ca. 5 mm long, both ends tufted with white villi. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from July to August.

Born in low mountain valley, moist mound. Distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places.

The wood (catalpa), leaf (catalpa leaf) and fruit (catalpa fruit) of this plant are also used for medicine. See special regulations for details.

[collection] the root bark was excavated in spring and summer, washed away the sediment, peeled off and dried in the sun.

[medicinal material] the white skin of Zigen is flaky with different sizes. It is about 20-30 cm in length, 2-3 cm in width and 3-5 mm in thickness. The external surface of the embolus is brown, shrunken, with traces of small branch roots falling off, but without obvious pores, and the embolus is easy to fall off; the internal surface is yellowish white, smooth and fine, with fine reticular texture; the cross section is uneven, with fibers (i.e. cortical and phloem fibers), and it is not easy to tear into thin sections. It is better to have large, thick and yellow skin.

[chemical constituents] the root bark contains isoferulic acid, sitosterol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The bark contains p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid.
