Deciduous shrubs or small trees, up to 8 meters high. Branchlets black green brown, smooth glabrous, with hard spines, spines 5-35 mm long. Leaves alternate, nearly leathery, ovoid or obovate, 5-13 cm long, base cuneate or rounded, apex obtuse or acuminate, entire or 3-lobed, dark green above and green below; hairy on both sides when young, smooth and glabrous except for the main veins below; 3 veins at base, 4-5 pairs of lateral veins; petiole about 1 cm long, slightly hairy; stipules small, separated, lateral. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; all in capitulum, short peduncle, single or paired axillary; male perianth 4-lobed, bracts 2 or 4, stamens 4, filaments erect; female perianth 4-lobed, style 1. The fruit is globose, about 2.5 cm in diameter, red, with fleshy persistent perianth and bracts wrapping the achene. The flowering period is June. The fruit period is from September to October.

Like to live in sunny barren mountains, slopes, hills and streams. It is distributed in Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc.
