[source] it is the fruit or seed of Ailanthus altissima.

[plant morphology] Ailanthus altissima, also known as maple tree, jiyachai, jiyanjiao, bird's tendon flower, chicken ether flower, flower bromine wood, Libra wood, Ailanthus altissima, Castanopsis kawakamii, muyuchai, yeshanqi, kaikoujiao, goutoujiao, nocturnal Ailanthus, chicken gizzard.

Deciduous small trees or shrubs, ca. 3 m tall. The twigs and buds are brownish red, and the branches and leaves are rotten after crushing. Leaflets 7-11, opposite, ovate to ovate lanceolate, 4-8 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, base rounded to broadly cuneate, apex acuminate, margin serrate, thick papery. Panicle terminal; flowers yellow white, ca. 5 mm in diameter; sepals 5, ovate; petals 5, oblong ovate, or suborbicular; stamen 5: filaments flat, lower part wide, disk annular; pistil 3, ovary ovate. Follicles, pericarp soft leathery, purplish red. Seeds suborbicular, aril fleshy, black. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from September to October.

It grows on hillsides, valleys, Riverside forests and shrubs. It is distributed in Henan, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Anhui, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc.

[collection] the mature fruits or seeds were collected from August to September and dried in the sun.

[chemical composition] the seed contains 25-30% fat oil. It contains Isoquercitrin, cyanidin 3-xylose-glucoside and astragaloside. The bark contains tannins.

[pharmacological action] astragaloside, similar to other flavonoids, can slightly reduce capillary permeability. It has antispasmodic effect on isolated small intestine and bladder of rats; it also has cholagogic effect on rats; intravenous injection has diuretic effect on dogs, but oral administration has no effect; it has no obvious effect on respiration and blood pressure.
