[plant morphology] Melastoma

Shrubs, evergreen, 1-5 m high. Stem densely covered with thick hairs closely attached to scales. Leaves opposite, broad ovate, 5-14 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, apex short pointed, base narrowly cordate, 5-7 main veins, densely covered with close coarse hairs above, densely covered with villous below; petiole 1-2 cm long, purple, covered with coarse hairs. The flowers are large and beautiful, purplish red, usually 3-flowered, sometimes solitary or 5-flowered; bracts ovate to lanceolate, shorter than calyx tube or as long as calyx; calyx densely covered with lanceolate, closely attached scalelike hairs, lobes lanceolate, as long as calyx tube; petals 5; stamens 10, filaments yellowish, 5 of which have purple anthers and extended connectives, the other 5 anthers are yellow, linear, with long connectives Septum not elongated; pistil 1, lower part of ovary connate with calyx tube, upper part densely pilose, 5-locular, ovule numerous, rachis placentate, style purplish red, stigma capitate.
