[plant morphology] saffron

Evergreen shrub, 0.5-2 m high. The root is thick and the surface is light brown. Branching, branchlets ribbed, green, pubescent when young. Leaves alternate, leathery, ovate or ovate elliptic, elliptic lanceolate, 3-6 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, apex long acuminate, base cuneate to round, entire, dark green above, glossy, green white below, pinnate veins not obvious; petiole 3-6 mm long. Flowers unisexual, axillary, often in short dense racemes, female flowers at the base; flowers small, white, fragrant, without petals; sepals 4-6, ciliate; stamens 4-6; ovary 2-3-locular, style short. Drupe subglobose. Fleshy, dark red, ca. 5 mm in diameter; 1-2 seeds. It blooms in spring.

It can be planted in the forest, in the ditch or on the hillside. It is distributed in Sichuan, Hubei, Yunnan, Guizhou, Jiangxi and other places.
