The body is long and flat. The abdomen is round. Body length about 18 cm, head short, blunt kiss. The upper jaw is slightly longer than the lower jaw, and the upper jaw is flat without gap. Dorsal fin Ⅱ 7, starting before or opposite the ventral fin. In reproductive season, the 1st to 4th root of male bighead carp is unbranched, and the fin is extended to the base of tail. The body color is bright, the back is gray black, the abdomen is silver white, there are 12-13 blue vertical stripes on the side of the body, there are many irregular pink spots between the stripes, the abdominal fin is light red, there are small black spots on the pectoral fin, the dorsal fin and caudal fin are gray, and the posterior edge of caudal fin is black.

Most of them live in the tributaries of rivers and rivers, and like to swim in the shoals with rapid flow and sandy bottom. The oviposition period is from April to June. They are distributed in Heilongjiang, Yangtze and Pearl River basins.
