Annual herb, 50-80 cm high. The fibrous roots are fine and numerous. Stem cylindrical, with obvious nodes, simple leaves alternate; petiole 5-10 mm long; sheath like membranous stipules at base, margin hairy; leaf blade elliptic or oval, 2-8 cm long, 1.5-5.5 cm wide, apex obtuse, base decurrent, entire, both sides blue-green after drying. Spikes, terminal or axillary; pedicels 4-8 cm long; bracts ciliated; flowers small, red, perianth 5-lobed, lobes ovoid; stamens 6-8, inserted at the base of perianth, medicinal yellow, ovoid; pistil 1, style not protruding, stigma 3-divergent. Achene, 3-ribbed, brown, glossy. The flowering period is July. The fruit period is from August to September.

Wild in the wilderness, beside the ditch. Distributed in Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Shaanxi and other places. It is cultivated from northeast to Guangdong.
