[plant morphology] junqianzi

Deciduous trees, up to 14 m high. The bark of old trees is dark black and deeply divided into square shape; the young branches are gray green and pubescent. Single leaf alternate, elliptic to oblong, 6-12 cm long, 3.5-5.5 cm wide, apex pointed, base rounded to broadly cuneate, dark green above, densely pilose at first, then gradually falling off, nearly white below, hairy at least on veins; petiole 5-25 mm long. Flowers unisexual, dioecious, clustered in leaf axils; flowers yellowish to reddish; calyx densely gray pilose, lobes triangular; male flowers 2-3, about 5 mm long, stamens 16; female flowers 1 cm long, nearly without truss. The berry is nearly globose to elliptic, 1.8 cm long and 1-1.5 cm in diameter. It turns pale yellow at first ripening, and then turns blue black with a layer of ash. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from October to November.
