The scales of the chest and abdomen are small and hidden under the epidermis. The lateral scales are 51-54, the lateral lines are straight and extend backward to the basal axis of caudal fin. The dorsal fin Ⅲ 8-9 starts from the posterior part of the ventral fin, the third unbranched fin is ossified, and the posterior margin of the base is denticulate. The dorsal surface is bluish black, the lateral surface and abdomen are white, most of the scales on the body side have a black edge, forming a more regular straight stripe on the body side; there are scattered small black spots on the head and back, and the dorsal fin, pectoral fin and caudal fin are slightly black.

Young fish mostly in the tributaries or mainstream of the coast, adult fish swim in the big water, ferocious, often prey on other fish. It is distributed in the main and tributaries of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, such as the Minjiang River, Jialing River and yayang river.
