[synonym] Jiao PI Ma, Shi Ba La Wen Gong (economic flora of China).

[source] it is the bark of pachydermum, a family of lacqueraceae.

[plant morphology] thick bark tree, also known as nanmu.

Deciduous tree, 4-10m high, rarely shrubby. The bark is thick and grooved. Branchlets, young leaves and inflorescences densely rusty stellate villous. Leaflets 7-9, opposite, oblong or long ovate, 5-10 cm long and 2-3.5 cm wide,. Apex long acuminate, base slightly oblique, entire, glabrous above, stellate puberulent below along veins. Panicle terminal; bracteoles 1-2 mm long; flowers small, monoecious or heteroecious; female inflorescence shorter; sepals 4, ovate, ca. 1 mm long, glabrous; petals 4, yellow or purplish, oblong ovate; stamens 8, shorter in female flowers and anthers undeveloped; ovary ovate, 4-locular, often degenerated into 1-locular, style 3-4, stigma shield. Drupe ovate, slightly flat, 8-9 mm long, red at maturity. The flowering period is from March to April.

It grows in the valley or in the open forest near the stream. It is distributed in Yunnan, Guangdong and other places.

[chemical constituents] the bark contains DL epicatechin, d-colorless cyanidin and tannin about 10%. The root contains octadecanol ferulate.

[function indications] for fracture and puffer fish poisoning.

[selection] ① treatment of fracture: three liang of kapok bark, two liang of ShanLuo bark, two liang of thick bark, five yuan of Jatropha bark, one or two of chicken bark, four liang of rice and distiller's grains.
