[synonym] root bark of bare dog stick (commonly used Chinese herbal medicine formula).

[source] it is the root or root bark of Cinnamomum macrophyllum.

[plant morphology] diaozhang, also known as Yu (Shanhaijing), diaozhang (bielu), Wuzhang (Tao Hongjing), sleeper (Shiji Zhengyi), dingdinghuang, xiaoyegantan, yezhangshu and guanggougua.

Deciduous shrub, 1-2m high. Bark smooth, black spotted; branchlets glabrous. Leaves alternate, oblong or obovate oblong, 6.5-12 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, base broadly cuneate, apex pointed or obtuse, entire, green above, glabrous below, gray green, hairy, veins covered with brown hairs, pinnate veins, lateral veins 5-8 cm; petiole 1-2 cm long, brown hairy or subglabrous. The flowers are unisexual, dioecious, with 9 flowers arranged in axillary umbels, pedicel covered with yellowish brown hairs; the flowers are yellow, perianth 6-lobed, lobes elliptic, glabrous; the male flowers have stamens 9, anthers 2-locular, lobed, introverted. Drupe globose, black, stipe 12-17 mm long. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from September to October.

It grows on hillsides, streams and roadside shrubs. It is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Jiangxi and other places.
