[plant morphology] Illicium verum
Perennial herbs. Rhizomes recumbent, with stout fibrous roots. Stem erect, about 20-40 cm high. Cauline leaf 2 pieces, meet and grow near the top of stem; stalk length about 14 cm; leaf blade shield shape sub circle, diameter 20 ~ 30 cm, 5 ~ 9 lobes, lobes wide triangular ovate, length 3 ~ 5 cm, leaf margin has fine teeth. Inflorescence umbelliform, at the intersection of two leaves on the top of stem, flowers 5-8, or more, drooping; sepals 6, elliptic, about 12 mm long; petals 6, dark red, arranged in 2 rings, outer ring 3 elliptic, inner ring 3 obovate; stamens 6, filaments flat, open; anthers as long as filaments or longer, introverted; style short, stigma shield, ovary superior. The berries are round. It blooms in early summer.
It grows in deep mountains and dense forests. It is distributed in the south, southwest and southeast of China.
The same genus of Dysosma is distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou. Its rhizome is the same as Illicium in Guizhou, and has the same efficacy.

[herbal medicine] rhizome is nodular, about 6-10 cm long, about 0.7-1.5 cm in diameter, light yellow when fresh, brown black when dry; the surface is flat or slightly concave, with several small pits on the top and ring lines below.
