Annual twining tall herbs. Stems pubescent. Stipules ovate lanceolate; stipules rectangular or linear. The leaflets are broad ovate to rhomboid ovate in shape. The leaflets on both sides are inclined. The tip is acuminate to long acuminate, with a slender tip. The base is broad cuneate, round or truncate. There are hairs on both sides along the veins, 4.5-16 cm long and 2.5-11 cm wide. Raceme axillary, shorter than leaves; bracts ovate, with raised veins, bracteoles ovate, slightly longer than calyx, with several raised veins; flowers white, yellow, red, 1.5-2 cm long; corolla butterfly shaped, wing petals with truncated ears on the upper side, underdeveloped ears on the lower side; stamens 2-body, ovary sessile, white bristle, style curly, hairy, stigma terminal, inclined . The pod is banded, swollen, glabrous, with a long beak at the top, 4-5 seeds, rectangular, reddish brown or white, bright. The flowering period is from June to July. [chemical constituents] the seed contains glycoprotein, which is divided into mannose, glucosamine, arabinose, xylose and fucose. The protein part contains very little cystine (or cysteine), but a large number of aromatic amino acids. It also contains a trypsin inhibitor, which contains almost no sugar at all, but is firmly bound to the pale pink blue pigment; it contains nearly 15% cystine, but few valine and aromatic amino acids. It also contains hemagglutinin and has strong activity on human red blood cells. The cotyledons and axes of non germinated seeds contained stigmasterol, sitosterol and a small amount of rapeseed oil sterol

The seed coat contains 3-glucosides of colorless pelargenin, colorless cyanidin, five color delphinidin, phenol, quercetin, myricetin, pelargenin, cyanidin, delphinidin, petuniacin and malvacaine; kaempferol xylose glucoside; 3,5-diglucoside of pelargenin, cyanidin and delphinidin. The root contains 6-aminopurine derivatives and guanine derivatives.
