Small evergreen trees, up to 4-6 m high. The branches are slender with long spiny needles. Leaves alternate; elliptic or ovate elliptic, 3-3.5 cm long, 3 cm wide, apex pointed, slightly concave, base round or cuneate, leaf margin slightly undulate, obtusely serrated or entire, veins inconspicuous; petiole broad winged. Flowers simple, axillary, medium large; calyx green, 5-lobed; petals 5, white, slightly tubular; disk annular. The fruit is slightly oblate, 4-7 cm in diameter, with thin stalk and persistent calyx; the peel is rough, wrinkled, yellow when ripe, easy to peel off, about 4 mm thick, fragrant; the pulp sac is 10 petals, kidney shaped, the middle column is small and full, the flesh and juice are light yellow, and the taste is very sour. Seeds about 20, ovate and large, cotyledons white, single embryo. It blooms in spring. The fruit period is autumn.
It is cultivated in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou.
