In his early years, he studied and taught medical psychology in the Department of brain, Peking Union Medical College, and founded a mental health consultation clinic in Peking first health office, Yuying middle school and Renli carpet factory. During the Anti Japanese War, he was a professor of Chongqing Institute of social education, and was responsible for establishing a mental health center in Chongqing Central Experimental Institute of health. After liberation, he was the deputy director of the Institute of psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is one of the pioneers of Chinese medical psychology.

Personal opinion

Ding Zan advocated that human's psychological activities are advanced neural activities with special new quality that have developed to human's psychological level. This is the research object of psychology; the correct solution to the problem of the scientific nature of psychology depends on the correct understanding of the problem of the psychological object. As a new advanced neural activity, psychology has the nature of both natural science and social science.

Discipline advocacy

Ding Zan is an advocator of modern Chinese medical psychology. He insisted on using dialectical materialism to guide the research of psychology. He believes that psychology is a subject with the nature of both natural science and social science, emphasizing that human beings have both natural and social essence, and the relationship between them is dialectical unity. He attached great importance to the selection and training of medical psychology talents, and advocated the comprehensive basic training of natural science and social science to improve the professional level of young scientific and technological personnel. He emphasized people's subjective initiative and attached importance to the role of psychological factors in health and disease.

Characters and deeds

Ding Zan is a famous psychologist in China. He led the preparation of the Institute of psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His long cherished wish for the development of Chinese psychological science has been placed in every activity from exploring the site of the Institute to organizing personnel. Ding Zan's leadership in scientific research organization management can be traced back to the initial stage of founding the people's Republic of China when he was preparing to form the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Ding Zan holds the posts of deputy secretary of the Party group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese director of the World Association for science and technology, and Deputy Secretary General of the all China Society for natural sciences. Under the care of Premier Zhou, he, Guo Moruo and other comrades together made contributions to the establishment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In the preparation of the National Congress of natural science workers and the establishment of the all China Federation of Natural Science Societies, in the implementation of the party's intellectual policy and the work of uniting the vast number of Chinese scientists, in strengthening the unity of the vast number of scientific workers in the Chinese scientific community and academic exchanges at home and abroad, they have made a lot of painstaking efforts and positive contributions; Ding Zan once served as deputy secretary general and Minister of Foreign Liaison Department of China Soviet Friendship Association, Deputy Secretary General of the Chinese people's Congress for safeguarding world peace, and so on. He made great efforts for the world peace movement.

Ding Zan is one of the founders of Chinese medical psychology and one of the founders of Chinese Mental Health Association. At the world mental health conference held in London in 1948, he was the only Chinese scholar. He has promoted the development of Chinese medical psychology and the application value of propaganda psychology. In order to popularize the knowledge of medical psychology and publicize the role of psychological science, Professor Ding Zan has been hosting regular and irregular lectures on mental health since the late 1930s, compiling mental health books and publishing articles in newspapers and magazines. The content of his speech is so profound that it is not easy to read. In 1964, when he was ill, he also insisted on the founding of psychological science communication.

Academic career

In Ding Zan's academic career, there are two outstanding characteristics worth learning. One is to carry out the work of medical psychology in close connection with the actual situation in China. "When he was a student in the Department of psychology of Nanjing Central University in his early years, Ding Zan received strict training in the psychological laboratory. After graduation, he carried out psychotherapy and research in Peking Union Medical College, and taught psychotherapy. He has conducted a large number of mental health surveys in some factories, schools and residential areas in Beijing, worked in consultation and outpatient service, and cooperated with physicians in internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and Gynecology, surgery and other departments to conduct special research on the relationship between psychological factors and the incidence, treatment and prognosis of various diseases. It is on the basis of this practice that he repeatedly called for "paying attention to thousands of compatriots with psychological suffering in Chinese society"; suggested "using domestic case materials to expand the publicity of mental health"; stressed "getting close contact with domestic medical, psychological and sociological circles for collective research, in order to stabilize the academic foundation of mental health work in China". As early as the 1940s, he repeatedly proposed that "we should have the courage to catch up" to raise China's mental health work to an advanced level.

In 1944, Ding Zan founded and presided over a mental health laboratory in China. The laboratory has its own experimental area, consulting office and outpatient department. It systematically and systematically carried out scientific research, medical treatment, teaching and popular science propaganda of medical psychology. Professor Ding Zan carried out the research on youth psychology, children's development, children's habits and behavior problems earlier. In the 1940s, he proposed that we should pay attention to the correct education of sexual health for children. His two books, psychological cultivation of youth and treatise on mental health, had a great influence on the society and academic circles at that time. Many articles he published in Xifeng magazine were eagerly read by the majority of readers. Second, he used dialectical materialism to study psychology and evaluate the situation of foreign academic circles. In his early years, Ding Zan introduced the work of many psychiatrists and psychologists in Europe and America to the domestic academic circles. He co translated the book "psychology of youth", which had a certain impact on young readers. Under the historical conditions at that time, he also introduced the work of Soviet psychologists, such as lulia and vygowski. Ding Zan introduced Freud's theory to the domestic academic circles in detail in his early years, but at that time he pointed out that the limitation of Freud's theory was that "he overemphasized the biological instinct and ignored the normative role of cultural environment on human behavior." Ding Zan once put forward in his article how to start mental health work: "in the study of human psychological phenomena, on the one hand, it has an active role in human cognition," and on the other hand, there is a social environment as the object of human cognition. The cognitive function of human psychological phenomenon is not simply a passive reflection of the environment, but it is not a surreal and isolated function. No matter in the understanding of normal or pathological psychological phenomena, we can not ignore either side of the subjective and objective aspects. " From this basic point of view, Professor Ding Zan put forward systematic and clear views on a series of theoretical issues of medical psychology, such as the object, method, goal and research means of medical psychology. These views are in line with the basic principles of dialectical materialism. They are valuable under the historical conditions at that time and have guiding significance today. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, he repeatedly put forward dialectical materialism as the guiding ideology of psychology, emphasized that psychology should serve the socialist construction, and made valuable contributions to the development of Chinese psychology. Professor Ding Zan attaches great importance to the selection and cultivation of scientific talents, and gives guidance to young scientists. In 1959, at the end of his article on the object and nature of psychological science, he once proposed that "in training young psychological workers, the basic training of natural science and social science should be comprehensive and should not be neglected. Because young psychologists are the future of psychology, and psychology is in a period of vigorous development, they should not be biased in their basic training, so that they are more likely to feel difficult in their basic knowledge when looking at psychological problems comprehensively in the future than they are now. This should be paid special attention to today. It has caused the difference in the understanding of the nature of psychological science today because of the neglect of basic training in the past. We must not delay future generations any more. ".
