Lu can
No. 3 star, worker, flower, good at portrait, known as "Wuzhong portrait skilful.". In 1779, Emperor Qianlong was called to the palace to draw portraits of civil and military officials and Emperor Yurong. He arrived in Beijing about the middle of November that year. On November 21, he began to paint Yurong. On December 14, he was ordered to paint 100 portraits of two meritorious officials in Jinchuan and Yili. According to the records, during this period, he was ordered to paint Yurong twice. It can be seen that his photo technique was approved by Qianlong. After he finished the portrait, he soon returned to the south. The next year, Qianlong suddenly issued an urgent edict that he must come to Beijing at the end of September and the beginning of October to paint a picture of the sixth Panchen Lama. In this year, six Buddhist Panchen masters from Tibet's houzang region came to Beijing to celebrate Emperor Qianlong's 70th birthday. This was a national event at that time. The government and the public were preparing nervously. Lu can was one of the activities arranged. According to the itinerary at that time, the Panchen Lama delegation will arrive in Beijing in early September. On October 30, Lu can came to Xihuang temple with Shu Wen, Minister of the manufacturing office, to paint a picture of the Panchen Lama. The meeting was probably just a first draft. On November 2, the Panchen Lama suddenly passed away. On November 19, it was ordered to officially start the painting of the sixth Panchen Lama. On December 3, it was finished, and then he immediately returned to the south. This is also mentioned in the biography of Liushi Panchen. To be sure, Lu can only finished the portrait of the main figure Liushi Panchen, and the other gods and the surrounding landscape background are all supplementary paintings by the Lama in the central hall. These contents are not Lu can's strong points, and they are not in line with his painting style. Therefore, the existing Tangka of Liushi Panchen in the Palace Museum has become a very rare work combining the two kinds of art. It is very rare for such folk craftsmen to enter the palace to participate in Tibetan Buddhist painting.
