Xuzhou is located in the north of Huaihe River. In history, the northern and Southern Dynasties often took Huaihe River as the boundary. Therefore, Xuzhou dialect was mostly impacted by the dialects of Central Plains and Qilu. After the Southern Song Dynasty, the Chinese dialects in Xuzhou were similar to those in the Central Plains. Generally speaking, the phonetic system of Xuzhou dialect is close to Putonghua. Xuzhou dialect is quite different from putonghua in vocabulary. There are many ancient words in Xuzhou dialect, which still keep the features of ancient Chinese or early vernacular.
