This data is reviewed by the project of data compilation and application of Science Encyclopedia of science popularization in China.

Hylaeosaurus (scientific name hylaeosaurus), also known as hylaeosaurus, gymnosaurus or hailarosaurus, is a kind of dinosaur of the lower order of primitive onychosaurus. It is one of the three kinds of animals that Richard Owen referred to when he proposed the first definition of the general purpose of dinosaurs in 1842, and it is the least clear among them. Linlong lived in the early Cretaceous, belonging to the early dinosaurs. Its fossils are only found in the UK. Linlong is one of the first dinosaurs to be discovered and the third dinosaur to be studied in the dinosaur world. It was named by Dr. mantel, the discoverer of ornithosaurus in 1833.

brief introduction

Linlong lived about 135 million years ago, also known as forest dragon, jungle dragon or Hailar dragon. Linlong is a typical armored dinosaur. It has two rows of spines on both sides of its body, two rows of spines on its buttocks, three lines of armor along its back, and possibly one line of armor on its tail. Lin Long's head is very long, more like nodule dragon, not like Jialong. They have beaks in front of their heads, suggesting that they may be feeding on low plants on the ground.

morphological character

Hylaeosaurus

The Latin meaning of "woodland reptile". Linlong lived in the lower Cretaceous fanlan stage to bereian stage, about 135 million years ago. Gideon mantel originally estimated that they were about 7.6 meters long, or about half the length of other dinosaurs at that time. It is estimated that Lin long is only about 6 meters long. limosaurus is a typical armored dinosaur with three long spines on its shoulders, two spines on its hips, and three rows of armor along its back. The tail may have a line of armor. The head of Linlong is very long, more like tuberosaur than Jialong. They have beaks in front of their heads, suggesting that they may be feeding on low plants on the ground.

Distribution range

Linlong's first fossil was found in Sussex. Other fossils have been found on the Isle of Wight and Aldin, France, but the fossils found in France may belong to spinosaur. Gideon mantel published his discovery in lithography in 1833, followed by another drawing in 1840. Mantel originally proposed that the meaning of Linlong was "forest lizard", which was named after the tilgate forest where the fossil was found. Later, he pointed out that this was "the lizard of Wilder", which was named after the early Cretaceous Wilder rock formation where the Linlong was found; and the word "Wilden" also means forest. the nickname of the Armed Forest dragon means "armored" because it has many rows of spines on its back and possibly its tail.

History of speciology

The type species is h. armatus, which was described and named by Gideon mantel in 1833. At that time, it was the only species of the genus. Their fossils consist of only two sets of partial skeletons, some spines and scales, and different small fragments. The most intact specimen is the first half of a group of bones, but most of the head is missing. Only the part on the surface of limestone can be studied. Polacanthoides ponderosus, H. conybearei, and H. oweni were considered to be independent species in the past, but they have been identified as synonyms of Armed Forest dragons. Some scientists have suggested that limosaurus and Spinosaurus are actually the same species, but there are several differences in their skeletal structure. In the traditional classification, limosaurus belongs to the subfamily Spinosaurus under the primitive tuberosauridae, just like Gaston and Spinosaurus. In the 1990s, the spinosaurinae was mistaken for having a small tail mallet and was reclassified as a primitive onychondridae, so Linlong may be a primitive onychondridae, but the overall study of spinosaurinae is still unclear. Spinosaurinae flourished in North America and Europe in the balymsian stage, but it became extinct in a short time, and was replaced by the more developed family.

Means of defending the enemy

When attacked by carnivorous dinosaurs, the heavily armed limosaurus would crouch down immediately, curl its forelegs and hind legs under its body, and lie down until the predator walked away. Although this is a very negative means to resist the enemy, it is very effective.
