Focus on reality
Most of Jia Pingwa's novels are realistic in ideological content. For example, impetuous describes the problems exposed in the initial stage of reform and opening-up with the emotional experience between the young golden dog and Xiaoshui as the main line; Tumen tells the process of urbanization of a village, criticizing the decadent way of life in the city and the conservative mentality of the countryside; gaolao is a typical example Zhuang tells the complicated emotional disputes between Gao Zilu, a university professor, and his old friends when he returns to Gao Laozhuang. It reflects the conflicts and contradictions in the rural closed and conservative and reform and opening up. White night takes the protagonist Yelang's wandering spirit as the main line, and shows the different situations and conflicts of men and women as ordinary people under the special social and historical conditions Through trivial details of life, Qinqiang depicts the changes of rural China, accompanied by the author's deep sense of hardship.
Focus on the individual
It is an important theme of Jia Pingwa's novels to care for individual survival and inquire about individual life. No matter Jingou, Chengyi, gaozilu, Heishi and so on, these characters are permeated with Jia Pingwa's exploration of human nature, the significance of individual survival and the way of realization. In the form of writing, in order to better explore the spiritual destiny and existence situation of all kinds of people, he often starts from life, adopts a dense fleeting narrative, persistently pursues the existence significance of human beings, and explores the way of self recognition and self realization for individual survival.
Traditional thought
Jia Pingwa is a relatively traditional writer, influenced by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. He integrated it into his unique understanding of life and society. Jia Pingwa integrated benevolence and righteousness, the core of Confucian culture and ethics, into his works, and naturally combined family ethics with the daily behavior and thought of the characters. Jia Pingwa's novels often use Taoist eyes to expound philosophy, depicting a novel and unique art world for readers. For example, the musk deer in the castle, the symbol of Taisui in yuanshanyeqing, the fox in Shanao, the omen of golden dog's birth in impetuous, the image of "looking at the mountain dog" in the ink needle on Golden dog's chest, and the taboo of golden dog and Xiaoshui all imply the cultural code of Zhouyi, which has a strong mysterious color and philosophical meaning. He combines these images with the daily life of farmers, which is not only in line with the reality of rural China, but also expresses the author's metaphysical thinking.
Land complex
Jia Pingwa has a deep complex for land. One of the themes he repeatedly publicizes in his novels is that land is the life of farmers and the survival pillar of farmers. For example, most of the characters portrayed in his works, such as Caicai, Shanshan and Renhou, are loyal farmers who make a living on the land. They cultivate and harvest the land carefully. Golden dog left the country, and finally returned to the country, land complex is his constant root. As the inheritor of Shangzhou culture and the pioneer of humanistic spirit, Jia Pingwa inherited his deep feelings for the land to a great extent.

Depicting nature
Jia Pingwa's vivid style depicts the unique natural scene of Shangzhou. Shangzhou is mostly mountainous. The beauty of Shangzhou's mountains and waters is a strange beauty with the characteristics of Qingyuan and simplicity. For example, he wrote about the ruggedness of the road: "the road on the hillside is mostly along the bank. Although it is close to the cliff on one side, the cliff is not close to the body, and it is close to the ditch on the other side. When you look at it, you will feel dizzy. There is no traffic on the Mao Road, and the only means of transportation are carrying poles and baskets." He wrote about the magnificent mountain: "the car began to go up the slope, and the mountain was getting closer and closer. It seemed that it was going to climb all the time, but suddenly the road fell at the bottom of the ditch, and it was dark and cold." He wrote about the sudden change of Danjiang: "Danjiang originates from the east slope of Qinling Mountains. When it emerges, it drips under a clump of willows. It flows through 300 Li Road in Shangxian County, but there is no climate. Only when it comes to Longju village, it receives Laojun River from liuxianping in the North and Dayu River from Siping in the south. The three rivers meet and the river rushes away. The distance between Nanshan and Beishan is seven, eight, or even ten li Danjiang has a roar
