He was not a member of Yuelu Academy. He was friendly with Luo Zhengjun in Xiangtan, sun Wenmin and Wang Shiqi in Ningxiang. I like to read the memorials of famous ministers of Yong and Qian, and the anthologies of Zeng Guofan, Hu Linyi, Zuo Zongtang and Guo Songtao. In 1890, Yutan Academy was established in Dongli county. During the reform movement of 1898, he successively served as the general manager of Hengyang lead sand refinery and the general manager of Pingjiang Huangjindong gold mine. In 1908, Xinhua Xikuangshan antimony mine was established. Three years later, he returned to China and sorted out his works. His works include Zhou Geng's memorial to the river, Yi Qingzhao's Ma Weifan's Liu Jiding's manuscript and Mei's posthumous letter.
