Xu Pei
Xu Pei (about 1511-1600), whose name is Kong Lin, is a native of Jiangshan. Wang Shouren's disciple. In the 20th year of Jiajing reign of Ming Dynasty (1541), he was a Jinshi, an official of remonstrance, a censor of Lianghu and a censor of Jingdu.
In the 27th year, Xia Yan, the head of the cabinet, and the governor of Shaanxi Province were framed by Yan Song and beheaded one after another. Excited by his righteous indignation, he risked his life to protest. He was killed by the Imperial Staff, stained his court clothes with blood, and then banished to Guiyang. In the 41st year, Yan Song and his son were dethroned and appointed successively as Xuezheng of Henan Province and zuozhushi of Guangdong Province. In the early years of Longqing (about 1567), he resigned and returned to his hometown. He built Dongxi Academy in the northern suburb of the county to give lectures. He expounded Wang Yangming's theory of conscience, formulated the learning system, and held monthly meetings. All the friends questioned and debated, and each of them had his own merits. He is diligent in learning all his life and is honored as Mr. Dongxi in the academic circle. His works include shidecheng, theories on the truth and falsehood of Taoist instruments, and Dongxi anthology.
