According to a report on the website of Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao on December 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China welcomed foreign friends to continue "planting grass" in China after the Chinese official announced on December 17 that it would further relax and optimize the transit visa free policy.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian presided over a regular press conference on the 17th. In response to a question about the popularity of travel pictures and videos to China on overseas social media platforms, he said that he has seen many videos of "China tours" online, where many foreign friends showcase the bustling scenery of modern Chinese cities and the daily lives of ordinary people through the lens. Among them, there are both "first-time customers" who are curious about China and "repeat customers" who are attracted by the charm of China.
Lin Jian expressed that foreign friends are welcome to continue "planting grass" in China, better experiencing the historical vicissitudes of "not being a hero without the Great Wall", the natural beauty of "clear and sparkling water", and the humanistic sentiment of "wanting snow in the evening, drinking a cup of nothingness".
In addition, according to a report on the website of CNN on December 17, China has announced that it will further extend the stay time of visa free transit foreigners in China. The report states that this is another measure to attract more foreign tourists.
The report also stated that the visa free transit policy is a popular "clever" measure aimed at foreign tourists who want to visit China but find the visa procedures too complicated. This policy allows foreign tourists who have booked flights from China to transit to third countries (regions) to be visa free upon arrival at Chinese airports and to travel briefly in China.
Since reopening its borders, China has openly hoped to increase the number of international tourists and has made several major policy adjustments.
The report says that all of this seems to be working. According to the latest statistical data, from January to November 2024, there will be more than 29 million inbound foreigners at all ports across the country, with a year-on-year growth of 86.2%. Among them, over 17 million people entered through visa free entry, a year-on-year increase of 123.3%. More than 4 million people have entered Shanghai, making it the most popular tourist destination.
The report also emphasizes that simplifying visa procedures is not the only change China has made to attract foreign tourists.
