Historical evolution
In 1845, American missionaries rented land to build houses in Jingnan.
In the 28th year of Daoguang (1848), the United States was established as an overseas Chinese.
In May 1863, the United States concession was delimited. In August of that year, the British and American concession was merged and renamed the British and American public concession.
In March of the 25th year of Guangxu (1899), it was also renamed Shanghai international public concession. The southern part of the territory is the main part of the northern and eastern parts of the public concession. The area to the north of the concession still belongs to Shanghai and Baoshan counties. After the August 13 incident, Hongkou was reduced to a garrison area under the direct jurisdiction of the Japanese Navy.
In August 1945, after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the concession was returned to China, and the Shanghai municipal government established districts. The main areas in the territory were divided into the 16th, 17th and 18th districts.
In 1947, it was renamed Hongkou District, North Sichuan Road District and Tilanqiao district.
After the liberation of Shanghai on May 27, 1949, the municipal Military Control Commission sent personnel to take over the three district offices and set up the District People's government.
In March 1956, North Sichuan Road District and Hongkou District merged into Hongkou District.
In 1958, the area south of Dalian Road and Dalian West Road in Yulin District, covering an area of 1.22 square kilometers, was assigned to Tilanqiao district.
In December 1959, Tilanqiao district and Hongkou District were merged into Hongkou District.
In December 1962, 0.06 square kilometers west of Luofu road in Hongkou District was classified as Zhabei District.
In 1979, it was originally Baoshan county and Yangpu District, covering an area of 0.87 square kilometers, and was classified as Hongkou District (now Quyang District).
In September 1984, Jiangwan Town and dabasi (now Dabaishu) of Baoshan County, covering an area of 9.38 square kilometers, were classified as Hongkou District.
In 1992, when the boundary was delimited, the situation was slightly adjusted. The north end of Miyun Road was assigned to Yangpu District in the East and Hongkou District in the West.
In December 2000, the area under the jurisdiction of Zhabei District was 4691 square meters, and the area under the jurisdiction of Hongkou District was 919 square meters.

Among them, four sub district offices including Zhapu Road, sanjiaodi Road, Jiaxing Road and tiantong'an have been merged, two sub district offices including Hengbang bridge and Changchun road have been adjusted, and six sub district offices including Lintong Road, dongyuhang Road, Yongding Road, Wuzhou Road, Xingang road and Hongzhen have remained unchanged.
In May 1991, Zhapu road and Wusong Road were merged into Zhapu road sub district office. Hengbang bridge and Changchun Road were merged into the sub district office of North Sichuan Road, and Hongkou Stadium and Hongkou swimming pool, which originally belonged to Guangzhong street, were included in the sub district office of North Sichuan Road. East Changzhi Road and Haimen road are merged into Tilanqiao sub district office.
In December 1993, the two sub district offices of Quyang new village and Yunguang new village were merged into the sub district office of Quyang Road.
In January 2018, Shanghai municipal government agreed to cancel Tilanqiao street in Hongkou District, adjust the jurisdiction of North Sichuan Road Street, and establish North Bund street.
