The origin of Idioms
Fan Ye of the Southern Song Dynasty wrote the seventh biography of Feng Yizhuan in Volume 17 of the book of the later Han Dynasty: "in the book of the seal, Lao Yi said:" the red eyebrows are broken and the officials are hard-working. Although they hang their wings back to the stream at the beginning, they can finally stride in the pool. It can be said that "the lost is the east corner, and the harvest is the mulberry elm.". In response to the great merit, Fang said Li Xian of Tang Dynasty notes: "Huainanzi" says, "as for Hengyang, it is called Yuzhong." In the former book, Gu Ziyun said, "Taibai came out of the West 60 days ago, and the law should be towering; now it has expired, and it is still idle in Sangyu." Sangyu is called late. Note: in the east corner, the place where the sun first rises refers to the East, also refers to the beginning of things; in Sangyu, the place where the sun sets at dusk, also refers to the final result of things. Huixi is at the junction of Qin, Jin and Henan, which is the east gate of Shaanxi. Mianchi is in Henan, which is located to the east of Huixi. Obviously, it does not mean "failure in the west, and victory in the East". Therefore, Liu Xiu's imperial edict Feng Yi's words should mean "failure at first, and victory at last".
Idioms and allusions
In the autumn of 25 A.D., Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu of the Han Dynasty established the regime of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Then, Liu Xiu pointed to the red eyebrow uprising. In the spring of 26 A.D., when Chang'an was short of grain, the hundreds of thousands of red eyebrow troops led by fan Chong had to turn westward to attack the city. However, they were blocked by kaihuo, who occupied Tianshui County, and had to return to Chang'an. By this time, Chang'an had been occupied by Liu Xiu and Deng Yu. After a fierce battle, the red eyebrow army defeated Deng Yu and occupied Chang'an again in September. In the winter of this year, the food supply of the red eyebrow army was still extremely difficult, so they had to lead troops eastward in December. On the one hand, Liu Xiu sent General Feng Yi to lead his troops westward to stop the red eyebrow army in Huayin (southeast of Huayin, Shaanxi); on the other hand, he stationed heavy troops in Xin'an (east of Mianchi, Henan) and Yiyang (West of Yiyang, Henan), cutting off the road of the red eyebrow army returning to the East. Feng Yi led the West Route Army and spent more than 60 days with the red eyebrow army in Huayin and Huxian. Deng Yu, who had been defeated many times by the red eyebrow army, led his troops to Hu county to join Feng Yi's troops. Deng Yu wanted to win, so he sent Deng Hong to attack the red eyebrow army first, and was beaten by the red eyebrow army. Deng Yu and Feng Yi led the main rescue force, and were defeated by the red eyebrow army in Huixi (northwest of Yiyang, Henan). Deng Yu fled back to Yiyang with only 24 horses, while Feng Yi abandoned his horses and only took a few people to walk back to Xiban and fled back to the camp. In the first month of 27 A.D., the red eyebrow army was defeated by Feng Yi in GuDi (Lizhuang village, Mianchi County, Henan Province) and suffered heavy losses. The rest of the rebels turned southeast, only to be surrounded by Liu Xiu in Yiyang. After hard fighting, the red eyebrow army was unable to break through. Fan Chong and others surrendered to Liu Xiu when they tried their best to run out of grain. After the end of the battle, Liu Xiu issued an imperial edict called "Lao Feng Yi Zhao". Among them, there are a few sentences like this: "at first I suffered setbacks in Huixi, and finally I won in Mianchi. This is the so-called defeat in the east of sunrise and victory in the west of sunset.
